Museums as Memory Places and "Ostalgy: Reflexions of Socialism in Czechoslovakia and in GDR

The diploma thesis deals with the image of socialism and everyday life in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the German Democratic Republic in museums thematically focused on the past regime. The aim of the research, which was based on the method of content analysis of two museum exhibitions (the Museum of Communism in Prague and the DDR Museum in Berlin were analysed), was to compare what image of socialism and everyday life under the socialist dictatorship museums create and what differences can be found. Attention was directed to exhibitions devoted to everyday life, which were examined, among other things, in terms of the reflection of ostalgie within the museum exhibition. The resulting comparison showed a different view of the era in the GDR and the Czechoslovakia within museum exhibitions, and confirmed the hypothesis that in the German case the ostalgie phenomenon would be manifested more prominently. While in the Berlin museum the focus is mainly on the everyday life of the citizens, which is portrayed here in a positive light and which in some thematic modules evokes almost ostalgic echoes, in the Prague museum the past regime is perceived more as a time of repression, as evidenced by the critical stand of the authors of the exhibition towards the omnipresent propaganda, which is...

The Hyphen War in the Discussions of the Federal Assembly of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic

The thesis focuses on the first months following the Velvet Revolution. In this period, the Czechoslovak political system is somewhat taken by surprise by new political agenda which becomes as important as the reconstruction of the parliamentary liberal democracy itself. National and ethnic problems emerging since the beginnings of the common state reappeared unexpectedly in the form of the Hyphen War. Besides the institutional framework within which the whole dispute took place, I analyze certain communication problems that not only influenced the form of the negotiations discussing the state name but also indicated the shape of the last years of Czecho-Slovak coexistence within one federation. The main source for analysis of the problem outlined above is the material of Společná česko-slovenská digitální parlamentní knihovna; specifically, a selection of texts composed of parliamentary debates records and stenographic records. The Social Democratic Party of Germany and Czechoslovakia (1973-1989)

This doctoral thesis deals with the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and its foreign policy towards Czechoslovakia during the 1970s and 1980s. It aims not only to analyse the relationship between SPD and KSČ (Communist Party of Czechoslovakia) but also the communication and cooperation between SPD, Czechoslovak dissidents and Czechoslovak political emigration. The main goal of the dissertation is to answer three basic questions: What were the goals of social democratic eastern policy (Ostpolitik) towards ČSSR? Were they achieved? Does the party changed its attitude towards Czechoslovakia after 1982, when it became an opposition party?

The departure of Warsaw Pact troops from the territory of ČSSR in years 1989 to 1991

The topic of this bachelor thesis is a radio documentary and its processing. In the theoretical part I describe the main features of a radio documentary and the principles of its creation. Furthermore, in this part I also briefly deal with the history of the genre. In the practical part of my work, I enclose a specific radio documentary I prepared on the topic of the departure of Soviet troops from Czechoslovakia, which took place after the Velvet Revolution. The basic element of the documentary in the practical part is mainly working with the radio archive and an interview with a witness. The skript of the practical part of the work is a part of the appendix.

The Helsinki process and it's impact on the regime oposition in GDR and ČSSR

This bachelor thesis deals with the opposition movement in the former Czechoslovak Socialistic Republic and the German Democratic Republic and aims at their comparison after signing the Helsinki Final Act of the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe. This Helsinki Accords committed both states to the observance of human rights. In the first part of the thesis the approaches of different authors to use the term of opposition and dissent are defined. The second part primarily outlines the international situation after the World War II and mentions the need for a European Security Conference, which after all led to the CSCE. In the third part, the opposition movements in both states are presented, and it is investigated how the situation of the opposition in both countries was influenced by the Helsinki process. The Charter 77 was quickly formed in Czechoslovakia. It referred to the commitments made in the Helsinki Final Act in its statement. The development was slower in the GDR. There was a stable opposition from the circle of the Evangelical Church, and mainly addressed was the peace question. The Human Rights Movement was inspired by the Czechoslovak Charter 77 and it began to emerge only in the second half of the eighties. This indicates that the development of the opposition movement...

Union of the journalists following of events Prague spring and its consequences at the time of normalization

The diploma thesis desribes the situation in Czech Union of Journalists during the Prague Spring era and the normalization era. Its aim is to explain to the reader how the situation changed after the intervention of Soviet army in August 1968. Prague Spring is generally perceived as a period of regime measures release and progressive ideas establishment. On the other hand, in the era after the Occupation strated theperiod of normalization and consolidation, which brought many repressive measures to light. It all took its toll in the function of Union of Journalists and the whole media sphere. The function of the Union o journalists becomes important from the political and ideological view. Attention is on the Union's structure as well. Thesis is focused on the period of 1968 to 1972 and embraces the historical events from Prague Spring to VI. Congress of the Union, in which the allegiance to Communist Party of Czechoslovakia was pladged by the journalists. It describes how the journalists were forced to conform their pursiut to the regime. Main focus is on the way of presentation of the journalists themselves, the relations in the Union and the change of the prestige and role of the journalist in the society before and after the normalization era. Thesis deals with the perspective of the Austrian press on events in Czechoslovakia in the early 1990s and especially the period so-called Velvet Revolution and development in 1990 and 1991. The main topics for the Austrian press became November 1989, the development of political events in Czechoslovakia, the opening of border crossings and the construction and operation of nuclear power plants in Czechoslovakia.
